Think big, make big. That was what initiators Neil Wallace and Léon van Geest had in mind when they set up the BIG IDEA Foundation. This initiative will create large site-specific productions in Rotterdam and give young talent in Rotterdam the opportunity to work with internationally renowned artists. The first edition – BIG IDEA #01 – takes place in the RDM Submarine Wharf (Onderzeebootloods) on 17th and 18th of October. For this first project BIG IDEA invited Lucinda Childs to create a new choreography together with 60 young dancers from the bachelor programme Dance Performer of Codarts Rotterdam, using Drift Multiply, an ambitious composition for 50 amplified violinists by Tristan Perich. The piece will be performed live by 50 violinists from Codarts, the DoelenEnsemble Young and The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. The ensemble will be trained and led the prominent American percussionist and conductor Doug Perkins.
The RDM Submarine Wharf is the setting for BIG IDEA #01. Léon van Geest, co-founder and also General Director of the ‘Rotterdamse Dakendagen’: “It’s not just about the shows themselves. We wanted to give young artists from Rotterdam and the Netherlands the opportunity to work with internationally recognized, top names. With Lucinda Childs and Tristan Perich we have brought in two great makers!”
BIG IDEA #01 – RDM Submarine Wharf
The first production BIG IDEA takes place on October 17 and 18, 2019. The legendary choreographer and ‘queen of minimal dance’ Lucinda Childs (79) is working with 60 dancers from Codarts for six weeks, to a composition by New York composer and visual artist Tristan Perich (37). This piece, Drift Multiply will also receive its European premiere as part of BIG IDEA #01 in Rotterdam. “Mr. Perich’s most sublime music until now”, the New York Times wrote about the piece after the performance at St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York. BIG IDEA #01 doesn’t just offer opportunities for young artists, but for technicians developing production skills also: as part of the project lighting and sound designers Paul van Laak and Han de Jonge will coach a small team of young technicians as well.

Former Programme Director of de Doelen and director of the International Choral Biennale Neil Wallace: “We went for renowned, international names, and we succeeded. We are also very happy with the collaboration with Codarts, the Royal Conservatory and other partners like the Doelen. BIG IDEA is bigger than just two shows, more than just for the public. It creates an experience for 110 emerging talents, the creators of the future. And all of this on an unprecedented scale right here in Rotterdam”
